Structural characterization of mixed (TiO2)(sub x)(ZrO2)(sub y)(SiO2)(sub 1-x-y) sol-gels (0.05 <= x, y <= 0.15) by a combination of X-ray and spectroscopy techniques
Article Abstract:
A combination of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and (super 17)O nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) is used to study the atomic structure of (TiO2)(sub x)(ZrO2)(sub y)(SiO2)(sub 1-x-y) zerogels (0.05 <= x, y <= 0.15). After the heat treatment at 1000 degrees C, the sample with x = 0.15 and y = 0.05 shows clear evidence from XRD of phase separation in the form of ZrTiO4 domains, which is not seen in other samples.

A methodology for investigating new nonprecious metal catalysts for PEM fuel cells
Article Abstract:
A methodology is described to investigate metal-chalcogen materials as catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. This new methodology is illustrated with reference to Co-Se thin films prepared by magnetron sputtering onto a glassy-carbon substrate and a comparison for ORR activity is made between Co-Se powders and a commercial Pt catalyst.

Combined X-ray diffraction ad diffuse reflectance analysis of nanocrystalline mixed Sn(II) and Sn(IV) oxide powders
Article Abstract:
The study synthesizes the nanocrystalline mixtures of Sn(II) and Sn(IV) oxide powders, potential gas sensor materials via a simple precipitation route using SnCl2 as the precursor. Materials are characterizes by powders X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
